Route 66 (Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico)- Day 3

Yesterday was a big day of traveling and Route 66 adventures!

Our first adventure on Route 66 was in Oklahoma. We got off of the interstate for a bit to drive on the Historic Route. This is what we found:
The road was concrete with raised edges. The road went on like this for miles.

This was our next stop. A Route 66 museum. We learned a lot about the evolution of Route 66 and the conditions of the road when it was first built. I have no idea how they drove on it! It was a mess!

Part of the museum had a replica of a little diner! I hope to find a diner like this on Route 66 to have lunch at!

Matt thought he was Fonzie.

The table in the fake diner had different sayings from the 50s. A "hockey puck" is a well done hamburger, doesn't sound very appetizing!

I wish I had one of these to drive down Route 66 in!

We also found this in the museum, a water jug that says vagabond. Perfect for our blog!

After the museum we pulled off of the interstate and we found this dirt road with a pull off to the side. We decided to eat lunch there!

Here's Matt enjoying his PB&J!

After lunch we drove some more, we finally made it to Texas!

There were a lot of old farms and windmills in Texas, and cows. So many cows!

We also saw tumbleweed stuck in fence rows.

And we saw quite a few dust tornadoes!

A couple we met at the museum suggested that we go to Cowboy Gelato when we reached Amarillo. It was right on Route 66 so we decided to stop in!

It was yummy! We both got blueberry lemonade (Matt is a copycat).

The area we got gelato was full of little shops. We walked around for awhile to stretch our legs and explore the area.

After gelato we went on to what we were most excited to see in Amarillo: Cadillac Ranch! 10 grafitti cars buried face first in a field!

Showing off the car!

Peek-a-boo!

Matt loved getting in touch with his gangsta side!

Showing off his finished product! O-H!

This sign was made from the same artist that did Cadillac Ranch. Because of my slight fascination with Alfred Hitchcock movies, I had to get a picture!

After Cadillac Ranch we drove right on to Tucamcari, New Mexico!

We saw this famous Route 66, roadside icon.
As well as this one!

We decided to drive a little further before calling it a day. We ended up staying right outside of Albequerque, New Mexico.
This was the view from our campsite.

We made chicken and beans on our little Coleman stove!

Matt enjoying his meal of black beans and chicken on tortillas!

We finished the meal and the day off with some s'mores! Yummy!

Today we are driving through Albequerque and off to Monument Valley! What should we see between? Does anyone know of any cute, 50s diners between there we should stop at?
